The Calypso was constructed in the USA in 1942 as a minesweeper for their navy. She was purchased in 1950 by Jacques-Yes Cousteau and after extensive alterations and modifications became a fully-equiped ocean research vessel, complete with observation chamber astern, an oval diving bell, Galeazzi diving chamber and inflatable boat for shallow waters, a helicopter and much other submarine equipment.
